Overview and Challenges

Classical music seems to be loosing its popularity. The chance of discovering the beauty of classical music is getting more and more elusive in this fast-paced modern world. For the people who might like classical music but haven’t found out about it yet, an encounter with classical music is what it takes. However, the traditional way of listening is not always effective for this. This project explores how technology can be used imaginatively to provide a new way of listening, which conveys the beauty of classical music in a more accessible way.

The Journey

This project started from primary and secondary research about the problem space, and got insights on the experiential quality of classical music, how classical music is different and similar to other type of music, barriers between public and classical music, what it takes to see the beauty of classical music, etc. All the insights informed the whole iterative design process, which produced the final design Music Fountain. The final design is a game installed in the in-flight entertainment system that leads users to save a cursed garden by choreographing a music fountain. In order to let the fountain dance, users need to finish some classical music related activities, the purpose of which is to get users pay attention to the music itself.
